When a battery makes sense (and when it does not)

Makes sense when you can finish this sentence

“I want a battery because ___, and the quote shows that reason in kWh and dollars I can check.”

Valid blanks include: evening-heavy usage, a labelled backup circuit, a current state incentive you actually qualify for, or a documented tariff that punishes peak grid imports.

A household empty until 6 pm in a Melbourne terrace is not a household that runs cooling all afternoon in Townsville. The batteries guide is the parent; this note is the “when.”

Does not make sense when the sentence is

“Everyone is getting one,” “never pay the grid again,” or “it will pay for itself in X years” with no usage file and no tariff.

After the panels

A season of monitoring tells you how much you export and when. Include a southern winter or a northern wet season if you can wait. Then you know whether the existing inverter can hybridise or must be replaced. “Hybrid-ready” is not a battery — see inverters.

If you add storage on day one, still demand a separate line item. The cost guide treats the battery as a second product for a reason.

Backup is a design, not a slogan

Whole-house backup is heavier than a labelled fridge-and-lights circuit. Medical loads need a licensed designer and a clinician in the conversation — not an editorial website. Placement, ventilation, and chemistry rules are manufacturer and licence matters. We do not publish DIY wiring.

Write the reason on the quote

If the reason is evening tariffs, the quote should show a usage shape, not a slogan. If the reason is a state incentive, the quote should show the agency URL and the approved SKU. If the reason is backup, the quote should list circuits. If none of those appear, wait.

Evening tariff, labelled backup, current incentive, or a model you can read. Those are reasons. “Everyone is getting one” is not. Retrofit after a season is often calmer.

Carry this into the quote meeting

Finish the because-sentence. Separate the line item. Retrofit after a season if you can. Incentives are not STCs.
